Downtown LA, LA Trivia

The Original Pantry Cafe, a famous diner in Los Angeles, shut down on March 2, 2025, after serving customers for over 100 years.

Opened in 1924, this 24-hour restaurant was known for its classic American meals like ham steak and eggs, pancakes, and coleslaw. Over the years, it became a well-loved spot for both locals and visitors.

Former LA Mayor Richard Riordan bought the cafe in 1981 and owned it until he passed away in 2023. After his death, the restaurant was managed by the Richard J. Riordan Trust. In August 2024, the trust announced it was selling the property, leaving employees uncertain about their jobs.

In early 2025, workers tried to form a union to protect their jobs. However, the trust warned that the restaurant might close if they continued. This led to protests and a legal complaint from the workers’ union.

On its last day, hundreds of customers came to say goodbye, showing their support for the workers. The closing of The Original Pantry Cafe marks the end of an important part of Downtown LA’s history.
