In the heart of California's Santa Clara County lies a special piece of history called Casa de Rancho San Antonio. This old house gives us a glimpse into the state's rich past AND it's the oldest remaining house in Los Angeles County.
A Brief History
Casa de Rancho San Antonio was built in 1834 as part of a large ranch. The ranch was given to José Joaquin Bernal, a Mexican soldier, in 1839. The ranch grew crops like wheat, corn, and grapes, and raised animals.
Architecture and Design
This old house is a great example of what buildings looked like in California during the Mexican era. It's made of adobe bricks, which kept the house cool in an era that lacked AC. The house has a special U-shape with a courtyard in the middle.
Restoration and Preservation
In the 1970s, the house was restored to its original look. Today, you can visit the house and learn about its history. And when you do visit, you can take a guided tour of the house and explore the beautiful garden. You'll learn about the people who lived there and why this house is important to California's history.
