Originally "Hollywoodland": The Hollywood Sign was originally erected in 1923 to advertise a real estate development called "Hollywoodland." It wasn’t intended to be permanent and only later became an iconic symbol of the entertainment industry.

Size of the Letters: Each letter of the Hollywood Sign is about 45 feet tall and 30 to 50 feet wide. The entire sign spans 350 feet across the hillside.

Saved from Demolition: By the 1970s, the Hollywood Sign had fallen into disrepair and was on the verge of being demolished. In 1978, several celebrities, including Hugh Hefner and Alice Cooper, helped raise funds to restore and preserve it.

Restricted Access: While many tourists attempt to visit the sign directly, access to the area is restricted. However, several hiking trails offer great views, such as those in Griffith Park.

Landmark Status: In 1973, the Hollywood Sign was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, recognizing its significance as a symbol of the city and the film industry.
