The 2nd Street Tunnel is a famous spot for filming and taking photos in Downtown Los Angeles, California. The Los Angeles Times called it "the most recognizable city landmark most Americans have never heard of." The tunnel is 1,500 feet long and lined with shiny white tiles that reflect light and create interesting visuals.
Built to ease traffic from the older 3rd Street Tunnel, construction started in 1916 and finished in 1924, officially opening on July 25 of that year. The white tiles came from Germany, which was controversial at the time due to Anti-German feelings during World War I.
Before the boring of the tunnel, from the Figueroa Street end, 1921
The tunnel goes from South Figueroa Street in the northwest to Hill Street in the southeast. Above the tunnel, 2nd Street runs for two blocks from Hill Street to South Hope Street.
The two entrances of the tunnel look very different. Automotive writer Dan Neil described the difference as "the grittier east entrance" and the "glowing west side, with buttresses that look like the Hollywood Bowl."
