Downtown LA

Little Tokyo is a special place in Los Angeles that feels very much like Japan. It has old-fashioned buildings from the 1800s and modern houses, all with Japanese style.  Here are three things you can do there:

  1. Watch traditional Japanese performances:  Every year, especially on New Year's Day and in early summer, you can see exciting dances and drum performances called Obon dance and Taiko. In August, there are more performances like flower arranging, tea ceremonies, and art displays that make you feel like you're at a summer festival in Japan.

  2. Visit the Japanese-American National Museum:  This museum tells the story of Japanese-Americans in the United States. You can learn about their history and watch movies or live performances. They also offer cooking classes and workshops where you can try traditional Japanese crafts.

  3. Explore the Japanese Village Square:  This area is like a little piece of Japan in Little Tokyo. You'll find small Japanese-style houses and lots of shops selling Japanese goods, sushi restaurants, bookstores, and fruit markets. There's even a wooden fortress-like structure that adds to the unique atmosphere.
